Hi, my name is James but I go by my middle name, Spencer. In 6th grade I “downloaded” my first copy of Photoshop to learn how to digitally draw comics. I self-learned through YouTube tutorials and trial and error. I did a lot of little gigs along the way, all through middle and high school. I designed logos and unit shirts and graphics during my time in the Marine Corps. Graphic design always stuck with me. I didn’t know how to quit it, and I think it’s just a part of me. I have explored motion design with After Effects, video editing with Premiere, and 3D rendering with Cinema 4D and Redshift. I know how to do a lot, and what I don’t know, I know how to teach myself.
Professionally, I have a Studio Arts degree from California State University, Fullerton. I started an apparel brand based around my time in the military, which was incredible. I worked for several years at an agency, doing client work for every digital and print application imaginable. At CoverageX, I held the title of Lead Brand Designer, but the role really functioned as a brand manager position. I owned the entire design pipeline for the main company and three sister companies. I even had the opportunity to handle the physical production of our Concierge Card program: designing, sourcing, and producing the physical cards on a prosumer laser the company purchased.
One of the projects I’m proudest of from that time was identifying a real problem, our visual content relied on generic stock photography that made us blend into every competitor in our category, and solving it by designing and training a Gemini-powered AI image generation pipeline from scratch. It replaced inconsistent, off-brand stock photos with a proprietary 3D isometric visual language and scaled our creative output from 5 to 35-plus assets a week. That project is where my AI-driven design work really started, and it changed how I think about what a solo designer or a small team is capable of producing.
Now, I’m deep-diving into AI-driven workflows and tools even more. Meshy, Seedance, Claude Design, Midjourney, Nano Banana, I have used them all and know exactly how to get what’s needed. These tools have finally let me build the kind of portfolio site I always dreamed of having but never thought I’d actually be able to build myself. This website is a testament to my current AI design ability.
I’m excited to bring everything I’ve learned, the craft, the systems thinking, and the AI fluency, to whatever comes next, and to help build something great.
